We’ve all experienced headaches at one point or another. I think we can all agree that when we’re experiencing a headache, it can be downright miserable, and all we really want is relief, fast. Most of us already have our go-to medication for headaches, but you may still be looking for some natural headache remedies

What causes headaches?

Headaches can be caused by a variety of reasons. General headaches are caused by overactivity or problems associated with structures in the head that are sensitive to pain. Some of these structures include blood vessels, nerves, and muscles in the head.

Other times, a headache may be caused by stress, lack of sleep, dehydration, lack of nutrition, eye strain, or a whole host of other reasons.

Common Types of Headaches:

  1. Sinus – These headaches typically develop over your forehead and cheek bones – you may also feel pain or pressure in your teeth.
  2. Cluster – Typically causes pain around the eye area.
  3. Tension – Generally occur directly over your forehead area and out towards your temples.
  4. Migraine – More often than not, these headaches develop on one side of your head, though it is possible to feel pain throughout your whole head. Many times migraines will come along with nausea and sensitivity to light and sound.

Each headache type can present with pain levels of varying degrees. You may feel them coming on over time, or they may hit you all at once.

7 Natural Headache Remedies

The good news is there are several natural remedies for headaches and we’ll cover some of them here.

IMPORTANT: If you’re experiencing headaches that are new, more frequent, or are causing you to be unable to function normally, please visit your doctor for a proper diagnosis before deciding to use natural headache remedies. Once you know exactly what you’re dealing with, and that you’re not experiencing headaches due to a serious, underlying condition, you can then make the choice to use some or all these natural headache remedies.

1. Drink plenty of water

– dehydration can cause a headache that generally won’t go away until the dehydration has been addressed.

2. Reduce your sodium intake

Avoid processed foods since it can increase your blood pressure and this may lead to unwanted headaches. Check the labels carefully. For many women, during their period is when they tend to get more headaches. Monitoring your sodium before and during your period can really help with pressure headaches.

3. Eat foods high in potassium

Since dehydration is a major issue, eating a baked potato with the skin can help replenish potassium in the body. Bananas can too. Get more on foods that help with headaches here.

4. Get plenty of sleep

This is easier said than done especially when we are in pain, stressed, or restless. Try to have your room as dark as possible and at a temperature that is on the cooler side. You can also use an app called Headspace, and use a 45 minute sound like Rain Pipes to help you get some rest.

5. Practice breathing exercises

Take deep breaths over the period of 2-15 minutes to help blood flow into the brain.

6. Aromatherapy Essential Oils

Reducing pressure in the body can be done through the use of essential oils. Also, keep in mind that if you are a person that is bothered by scents, skip the next 2 tips since this may trigger a headache instead of helping.

These are the top oils for headaches 1. Roman Chamomile 2. Clary Sage 3. Eucalyptus 4. Lavender 5. Spike Lavender 6. Lemon 7. Sweet Marjoram 8. Neroli 9. Peppermint 10. Rosemary

7. Aromalief Hemp Pain Relief Cream

The cream can also help with reducing headaches naturally. Aromalief contains anti-inflammatory ingredients that when applied to the neck and shoulders can reduce tension in those areas. It has lavender essential oil that brings calmness to help you relax and reduce stress.
