New research in Europe suggests that glucosamine may stop and even reverse the disease.  The study looked at knee arthritis in post-menopausal women - the time in women’s life when knee arthritis is highest due to decreased estrogen.  Researchers at the University of Milano observed 414 women over the course of 3 years, where half took 1,500 milligrams of glucosamine daily and the other half took a placebo.   After 3 years, x-rays of participant’s knees showed that those taking glucosamine had no further cartilage loss while the women taking the placebo continued to experience cartilage loss.  


This ability to stop cartilage loss may even be a reason to use glucosamine preemptively for women, considering the high rates of arthritis in menopause and beyond.  


The study above looked specifically at knee arthritis but glucosamine heals arthritis in all the joints of the body.  Women with arthritis find that taking glucosamine significantly reduces their pain and stiffness while increasing their mobility and function in their knees and hips. 


Glucosamine may treat osteoporosis.


Along with combating osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis, glucosamine has been widely studied as a treatment for osteoporosis.  It is believed that glucosamine improves bone strength. It has even been shown to help repair bone fractures.  


Other uses for glucosamine


Glucosamine is healing for more than just joint and bone disorders.  Here are some other, lesser-known ways that glucosamine may impact your health.

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome: Some people note relief from IBS when taking glucosamine.  This may be due to glucosamine’s strong anti-inflammatory properties.  Studies support that glucosamine suppresses DSS-induced colitis.  

  • TMJ (temporomandibular joint): Glucosamine combined with ibuprofen has been reported to decrease jaw pain and increase mobility in persons with TMJ.

  • Multiple Sclerosis:  Scientists at the University of California, Irvine, found that glucosamine subdued the destructive autoimmune response that occurs in MS. Glucosamine may “inhibit the growth and function of abnormal T-cells that mistakenly cause a person’s immune system to attack and destroy myelin, the tissue that insulates the nerves,” says Medical News Today.  These results were repeated in a study at Jefferson Medical using mice.  The mice taking glucosamine experienced increased ability to move and walk and delayed onset of MS symptoms. 

  • Because of its ability to reduce inflammation, glucosamine is used for a variety of ailments including allergies, back pain, headaches, and skin issues like eczema and acne.  While scientific research is preliminary and inconclusive, the power of anti-inflammatory compounds is well known.
